Morning Session: In the Blink of an Eye
Featuring Keynote Speakers:
Randy McGregor, Fire Chief, Bryan Fire Department
Firefighter Ricky Mantey, Bryan Fire Department
On February 15, 2013 the Bryan Fire Department responded to a reported fire at a Knights of Columbus Hall. Engine 5 was deployed as the Rescue Intervention Team (RIT) to rescue a downed firefighter. The Lieutenant had been separated from his accompanying firefighter and was running low on air. The crew of Engine 5 found the Lieutenant and began removing him from the building when a flashover occurred. In the blink of an eye, the conditions inside the building changed and not only did the behavior of the fire worsen, lives were lost and others were altered forever. During this presentation, we’ll discuss how the Bryan Fire Department has changed operationally and focus on the importance of preparing and executing a proper RIT operation during the worst of conditions. We will review the evening in detail and walk through the firefighters’ injuries, rehabilitation, and the memorial of the two Lieutenants whose lives were lost on that tragic day, in hopes of preventing another tragedy like this from ever occurring.
